The Phoenician Scheme

In a landscape adorned with sprawling vineyards and opulent estates, the Korda family reigns over one of Europe’s most illustrious wine businesses. At the helm is Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro), a shrewd and enigmatic magnate who has built his empire through a blend of tradition and cunning business strategies. However, as he nurtures his legacy, he grapples with the challenging task of balancing familial bonds with the cutthroat nature of their industry.

Liesl (Mia Threapleton), Zsa-zsa’s daughter, has taken a drastically different path. Once destined to inherit the family business, she has chosen a life of devotion as a nun, seeking solace in spirituality and distancing herself from the material temptations that surround her family. Her decision causes a rift with her father, who views her rejection of the family’s legacy as a betrayal. Zsa-zsa’s struggle with his daughter’s choices highlights not only the tension between ambition and spirituality but also the destructive cycles of power and expectations within familial relationships.

Adding complexity to the family dynamic is Bjorn (Michael Cera), an eccentric and idealistic tutor brought in to guide Liesl and provide her with an out-of-the-box education. As the two develop a deep, unconventional friendship, Bjorn finds himself caught between Zsa-zsa’s ambitions and Liesl’s quest for inner peace.

The film features a star-studded supporting cast, including Riz Ahmed as a rival wine producer eager to exploit the Korda’s vulnerabilities, Tom Hanks as a respected critic whose reviews can make or break reputations, and Bryan Cranston as a trusted confidant with secrets of his own. As the family navigates treacherous waters filled with betrayal, ambition, and unyielding expectations, their story culminates in a poignant exploration of what it means to balance love, legacy, and personal truth. Bound by blood yet divided by choices, the Korda family must confront the question: What is their true legacy?
